Acer palmatum Red Dragon is a dark red lace leaf, weeping type Japanese Maple tree from New Zealand. Its stunning dark maroon branches persist during the entire growing season. Fall color is a bright red. The young leaves are a bright scarlet color in the spring, becoming dark burgundy as they develop. The rich color holds well until it changes into an outstanding flaming scarlet in the fall.

Acer palmatum Emperor I This beautiful red acer palmatum is an exceptionally hearty Japanese maple tree. Its leaves are a deep purple-red during the growing season then change a stunning dark crimson in the fall with leaves that glow in the sunlight. Emperor I is also known as Red Emperor. The tree has an up-right wide crown which makes it a good focal point for a large landscape.

Acer Japonicum Vitifolium is commonly called full moon maple. It has rounded, palmate, fern-like, medium green leaves which turn yellow and red in fall. Each rounded leaf resembles a full moon, hence the common name. Small purplish red flowers appear in early spring . It grows over time to 10-15) tall. Leaves emerge with bronze tones, mature to green and develop excellent deep purple, orange and red fall colors.

Barry and Sue Hoffer, Owners and Arborists
The owners having been involved with the growing, care and pruning of he maples for over 14 years.
Barry’s passion is Japanese Maples. He turned this passion into a business when he opened Maples for all Seasons, a Nursery, specializing in Japanese Maples, based in Pleasanton, CA His passion grew from when he acquired his first Japanese Maple, Acer japonicum, Acontifolium, 15 years ago, to a collection that now consists of ¾ of the worlds available cultivars. He is still adding.
Barry serves as President of the Northern California Japanese Maple Society, which is associated with the California Garden Clubs. He regularly conducts classes as “The Maple Guy” teaching about gardening with Japanese Maples, the care and pruning of Japanese Maples as well as discussions on the four seasons of the Japanese Maples. Being as expert on Japanese Maples, including the care, planting and pruning, Barry has been on Radio, TV and does regular appearances at local Garden Clubs, Flower and Garden Shows, Home and Garden Shows, Landscape and Garden shows as well as nurseries throughout the western states.
Barry’s main goal is to make Japanese Maples available to all at very reasonable prices.
Sue has collected Japanese Maples along with Barry for the past 15 years. Her favorite cultivar continues to be her first, Koto hime. She is most partial to the dwarfs.
Sue has a degree in Chemistry with a minor in Biology. Her passion for pruning is focused on Japanese Maples and Citrus. She is an expert in both the pruning and care of them. She serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the the Northern California Japanese Maple Society.

Our approach to tree pruning ensures we meet industry standards and customer expectations while causing minimal harm to the tree. Pruning improperly performed, can harm a tree’s health, stability and appearance. Consequences can include development of low limbs, weak stems, defects such as included bark and accumulation of dead branches. Different species of trees are unique living organisms, and each must be handled and pruned accordingly.
As Arborists we have an understanding of branch attachment and tree biology. Efficient, effective and correct tree care and pruning is mix of art and science.

Acer palmatum , called Japanese Maple or Smooth Japanese Maple ((Japanese: irohamomiji,or momiji,) is a species of woody plant native to Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia. Many different cultivars of this maple have been selected and they are grown worldwide for their attractive leaf shapes and colors. They are highly sought after.
